And so it begins! This weekend, April 1, 2011 will mark the beginning of CRAZY busy wedding season for Dinsmore Studio! Our shooters are all VERY excited and ready to hit the ground running.

As the temperatures warm up and the Spring colors blast us with their brilliance, call and schedule your engagement and bridal portraits! There are many places to choose from for these sessions, but I will share with you our favorite places! (Shhhhhhhhh, don't tell anyone!) We love to go down to the Paseo Art District for engagements as well as the River Walk. These places lend their architecture, fabulous color pallet and textures to make beautiful pictures. But if you want waving wheat and hay bales, we can find that too! You might even discover random hearts that farmers leave on their hay bales for us!! It is like they KNEW we were coming!!

One of our favorite places to shoot bridals is in Guthrie at the Masonic Temple. There are soooo many different kinds of rooms in that place. When I went there for the first time I totally discovered the NERD in me! The library was by far my favorite room!! LOL!

~Bridal Show Do's~

Well, here we are!! Engagement season and thus.......BRIDAL SHOW SEASON!!!!!! We at Dinsmore Studio love bridal show season because it gives us a chance to really showcase our best work and do what we girls are best at................CHATTING!!

So while packing your purse and grabbing your entourage for the rounds of bridal shows, here are a couple of things to keep in mind.

1. Come prepared. You may be asked to fill out a hundred information slips so bring labels with your name, wedding date and contact info.

2. Schedule PLENTY of time. Take your time walking the booths and collecting information from vendors. You never know the kind of deals you are missing out on if you run from one booth to the next. This is especially true of photographers because you may have the photographer for your wedding, but do they shoot engagement, bridal or boudoir? Do they have a studio that can be shot in all year around?

3. BYOB. Nooooooooooo you silly! Bring Your Own Bag!! You will be bombarded by freebies and handouts. Sometimes they will give you a bag at the door and sometimes they have already run out! So BYOB!

4. Reward! Here in Oklahoma City there are many businesses that have signed up with okBride Rewards and are offering discounts and free stuff just for being a card holder! It is free to the Bride and can save you TONS!

5. Take notes. Because there will be so many vendors, you may get things a little confused. So with the vendors you are especially interested in, write down the things that you really liked about them. Personality? Price? Availability?

These are just a couple of things to keep in mind when making your rounds of the bridal show circuit:)

6. HAVE FUN!! Don't let the noise, number of people or pushy vendors intimidate you! Just smile, nod and collect information. You can go home and weed through the info you want to keep and the info you don't want.

At Dinsmore Studio we field questions everyday from brides about timing, tips, vendors, locations etc. I am going to attempt to answer a few of those questions, but feel free to add comments or ask questions that I can answer in another blog or send you a direct email!

Q: How long before my wedding should I hire my photographer?
A: Depending on the popularity of your photographer we suggest hiring as soon as possible. Our head shooter at Dinsmore Studio usually books almost a year in advance. Our other 4 photographers are soon to follow, so putting down your deposit and selecting your photographer at our studio is as important as selecting and reserving the location you want for your big day.

Q: When should we get our engagement pictures taken?
A: We recommend getting your engagement pictures taken at least 4-5 months in advance. If you want them for save-the-date cards you may want to take them at least 6 months in advance.

Q: When should I get my bridal portraits taken?
A: We suggest 2-3 months in advance so that you have time to get your dress fitted correctly and comfortably. We also suggest you use this opportunity as a "dress rehearsal" by having your hair and make-up done by your stylist to see if it all works together the way you want it to on your wedding day. You may also find out how easy or not so easy it is to move in your dress or how long it takes to put it on. These facts will be very useful when getting ready on your wedding day.

Q: Should I tip my vendors?
A: We are neutral on this subject. As consumers ourselves there are services that are important enough to us that we feel we want to tip according to the service received. You may feel the same. So though we would never ask, the gesture is always appreciated. If nothing else, a note in the mail or message on our facebook fan page is a treasured reward in itself.

~Playing Dress Up~

Just admit it..............girls LOVE to play dress up. Most of us have very fond memories of being the 5 year old Barbie bride that gets to marry the ever handsome Ken. My little girl turns Canon in D on her keyboard, wears a veil I bought for her for a dollar and dances around her room.

So why should we stop dressing up just because we are "grown up?" We shouldn't and that is what weddings are for and getting all dolled up for a bridal portrait. At Dinsmore Studio we encourage our brides to get a bridal session by offering it as a part of their deposit. We think it is important for the bride to do this because it gives them the chance to have a "rehearsal" in their dress. The bride will figure out how comfortable or uncomfortable it is to wear her dress. She also gets a chance to play with her hair and make-up before the big day.

If a bridal session is not what the bride wants then we also offer an engagement session with the deposit. These are handy for announcements or save-the-dates or just to make a collage so that someday you can sit around and remark about how young you looked.

This is also a good opportunity to get to know the photographer. At Dinsmore Studio we have five photographers. If the couple choose to do a location away from the studio they can ask specifically for their photographer to shoot their engagement pictures. This will enable the couple to get to know and feel more comfortable with the ability of their photographer so that things go more smoothly and they can be more relaxed and have fun on their wedding day.

~Wedding Season~

Wedding season typically starts end of April or beginning of May and goes through September, however this year it has been stretched through the end of October. Partly it is due to it being 2010 and many wanted their wedding date of 10-?-10.

We are also seeing a trend of 1-?-11 and will probably start booking more 11-?-11.

So do I have to get married during wedding season? Wedding season is the most popular time mostly because of weather, however, we are seeing more brides and grooms going off the beaten path and choosing to get married at other times of the year. There are benefits to this in several ways.

Vendors are more likely to have your date available. In fact, they may offer discounts or give you more time in their facility because they are not as busy. This could be very helpful to a budget friendly bride.

Take advantage of end of season discount on dresses and tuxes or start setting an early trend for next year. At the end of most seasons bridal boutiques are offering their last season merchandise on serious clearance. If you are more of a trend setting kinda bride then you'll be happy to know that many bridal shops and such are picking up next years styles and decoration trends.

As far as photographers are concerned you can almost have your pick of the litter. At Dinsmore Studio we have five photographers and are booked almost solid through the wedding season, but during the off season you are more likely to find one or two of them off during any given weekend.

And who said you had to get married on a weekend anyway! Get married during the week! So you miss an episode of Glee or Grey's Anatomy. You have a DVR!!! This might enable you to take a longer honeymoon or get a discount with your airlines because you are flying on a weekday.

So who said you had to get married in June. Be a trend setter or take advantage of the seasonal discounts! Create a wedding that is different then everyone else and you will be remembered.

~Meet Your Photographer~

At Dinsmore Studio we have five photographers. Each of our photographers has a differing style and each person, of course, has a different personality.

To make the wedding day for each our brides and grooms more comfortable and flow more smoothly, we like to establish a relationship. One way in which we do this is to offer a free in-studio engagement session or bridal session. This enables us to get to know our couples, or at least the bride, better so that on the wedding day the B & G are more comfortable and confident with their photographer. They also are used to how their photographer likes to pose them and things feel more natural. When the B & G are comfortable the pictures will reflect that.
The other way to get to know your photographer that we encourage is setting up a meeting with them here at our studio. One of the nicest things about hiring us to shoot a wedding is that we have a permanent location with set business hours. When the phone rings, there is someone here to answer it. We do not work out of a house or some random coffee shop. You can meet and let your photographer know your expectations or perhaps share some of your ideas. ~When Should I Do What?~

We at Dinsmore Studio have many brides that want to know when the best time is to get their engagement pictures and bridal pictures taken. Many wait too long and then they are having to rush to get things done or they are disappointed when portraits don't come in on time. So LISTEN UP!!!! Here is what you need to know!

Engagement pictures need to be taken at least 9 to 12 months before the wedding. This is because you will need pictures to send to home newspapers and if you plan to send "Save the Date" cards they will need to be sent out at least 9 months in advance.

Bridal portraits can be taken closer to the wedding date, but we recommend doing a trial run with hair and make-up for the bride to get an idea of how she is going to get into her dress on the big day. Lots of brides try on their dress and get fitted for their dress while their hair is in a pony tail and they have on little to no make-up. On the day of the wedding they don't realize how difficult it will be to put on the dress in perfect hair and full make-up. There is always the same question, "Should I dive in or step in?" A trial run, while getting your bridal portraits, affords the best time to figure this all out so on the day of the wedding it will flow smoothly.

~HELP!! WHAT'S MY STYLE??!!~

Many brides get a little confused when photographers start spouting words like TRADITONAL, PHOTOJOURNALISM or HIGH-FASHION. What is the difference? You know the style you like, but what is it called?

Traditional is posed and the subjects are stationary, usually looking at the camera. There are a lot of group shots, a shot of bride full length and close up. Same of groom, cake, etc. This was the only style used until recently.

Photojournalism is probably the most popular style at this point in time. This style captures the candid moments, uses the camera tilt and there is no detail too small to shoot!

High-fashion is the newest and most up and coming style. It is gaining in popularity because of the tricks photographers have learned about lighting and how to manipulate it. These pictures often make there subjects look as if they just stepped out of a magazine.

So now you have been informed! You should know that the photographers at Dinsmore Studio can all shoot traditional and photojournalism. We have started shooting some high-fashion and have a couple of photographers that have become very good at this. Not many photographers have the proper knowledge to achieve this look and we are the only ones in Oklahoma that can shoot this style.

~I got a new camera!~

"I GOT A NEW CAMERA!!!" No the studio did not get new equipment, but this statement is heard often since digital cameras have come into creation and have become so affordable to the regular person. No longer is picture taking such a difficult field to learn. Everyone is a photographer!!!

During this downturn in our economy many brides are looking for ways to save. They will use some silk flowers instead of all fresh, nix having servers from the catering company, print their invites at the local copy shop and even hire a friend or relative with a "nice new" camera to shoot their wedding! The crazy things people will do for love!!!

So when deciding the areas that you need to cut back when planning your wedding please reconsider the decision to hire a amateur verses professional in the photography field. Here are a couple of reasons why.....................(in no specific order)

1. Experience - Weddings are fast paced and hectic. Beautiful pictures won't just happen. You need a photographer who knows their timing and can perform what you want in the time allowed.

2. Program - What is that? A true professional will shoot NOTHING on this setting on a camera. Knowing ones camera is imperative. There is so much more you can do to your photos if you understand how to manipulate the settings to use the light and other natural surroundings to your advantage.

3. Editing - When the wedding is over will your photographer edit your pictures or will they just burn you a disk and let you do all the work of adding effects or not adding effects? A professional will not only be able to enhance each photograph's colors, but add the kinds of effects you see in magazines and online websites.

4. Timelessness - Though the style of photography keeps evolving, a professional will not only take those creative art style pictures, they will also capture their subjects in a timeless photo. The kind you pass down to the next generation.

There are many other reasons to hire a professional, but I want to leave you with one last thought. This is one of the most important days of your life. You can keep your dress and some decorations though you will never wear them again, but your photos will hold that day in your life forever. When the flowers fade your pictures are what you have to remember those special moments. Tradition has it that on the day of a wedding the bride and groom do not see each other until the bride's father walks her down the isle to meet her groom. I too was one of those traditional thinkers when I got married. My photographer tried to tell me for the sake of the pictures it would be in my best interest to see him before, but in my stubbornness I refused. Then after the wedding was over and I got to see our wedding pictures I was disappointed. I have two different pictures of the two of us together and only one is what I would classify as the style I wanted and even it is not very good. My husband and I got married in the yard of my parents home and the house is an old turn of the century victorian. There were so many great places to shoot outside and inside. I fault myself and my ignorance or perhaps stubbornness to a certain degree and the inexperience of my photographer as well. Though the inexperienced photographer is for a blog another day!

So as I have become a wedding photographer my eyes have been blown open to the facts of the situation. What are the most important pictures to you on the day of your wedding? To some it may be the bride and her dress, but to most it is the pictures of the couple. These are the ones you choose to grace the walls of your home together and the pictures you share with your children and grandchildren. So why then do we give the photographer the least amount of time to take them? We give them oodles of time to take the bride getting ready and the groomsmen acting all cool and hanging out before the ceremony, but the picture that matters the most is given barely moments after the ceremony.

So brides I want to offer you an alternative idea. Something we do at Dinsmore Studio that keeps couples happy from both sides of the argument is a blind fold! At the place of your choosing we kick everyone out of the room and the bride and groom get the opportunity to see each other for the first time without an audience. We, as the photographers of course, will stick around for the first couple of minutes to capture the moment for you and they we gracefully step away for you to have your moment. Say the things you have been dying to say all day to the person you have chosen, who has also chosen you, to spend the rest of your life together. That special moment does not have to be shared with 150 of your closest friends and perhaps not so close family! You can keep it all to yourselves and express to each other in the moment how happy you are and how beautiful she looks and how much you love him.

The other thing you accomplish is giving the photographer more time to take those WOW pictures of the two of you. The more time a photographer gets, the more creative they can be and the more pictures you will get to choose from. Just remember that and I guarantee you will be happier then I was when you look at your pictures after the wedding.

She is our only album designer and one heck of a speller too! I heard she gets that from her fabulous daughter, Maddie! We love her!

Taking a deep breath

Wow! These last couple of weeks have been busy, busy, busy! Wedding season may be a couple of months away, but booking season is right over our heads!

January 3rd we had the Cox Bridal Show in the city. There were over 600 brides there! Now remember, not only were there over 600 brides, every bride brought her posse. The posse would usually include; mom, sisters, bridesmaids, possibly the groom himself and occasionally the mother-in-law! So there was a CRAZY number of people there! We had a blast talking to brides because after all.................we are a bunch of women and lets face it............ WE LIKE TO TALK!

Yesterday we did the Enid Bridal Show. We talked to lots of potential brides and of course............their posse! It wasn't as crazy as the Cox show, but always fun!

One thing we like to suggest to our brides is the idea of taking some boudoir pictures for the fiance as a wedding gift! Every woman likes to feel sexy for her man, but it is also good for the woman. When YOU think you look sexy then that may be all that matters! It will boost your confidence and restore the faith you have in the fact that you are beautiful woman and have a lot to offer. Think about it.........................we know your man will be!

Christmas Cards! Bridal Shows! Orders, orders and more orders! Advertising! Family.... wait who are they? We have been crazy around here! Our families are not going to know us when we get the day off for Christmas Day! LOL! Well as long as we found some time to get them presents I'm sure they will forgive us for neglecting them today.

Because it has been a mad house around here I am going to introduce you to the girls and then let them fill you in on what they want you to know later.

First up, Studio Manager and photographer extraordinaire Mandy Davis. Mandy began her photography career in Enid many moons ago. As soon as that camera was in her hands she knew she had found a love. She found her passion and it certainly shows in her work.

Mandy is a recent bride herself having gotten married fall of 2007. She has two sons and lives in the Oklahoma City area.

Sarah Funderbirk is an editor and our album designer. She started working for Dinsmore in 2002 as a lab tech when yes............we were still film and yes................we had a dark room. She and Dinsmore have come a long way!

Sarah F. has a daughter who she claims is smarter then her and is currently single so bring on your single groomsmen ladies!LOL! (She'll probably kill me for that!)

Sarah Johnson is an editor, which may sound simple, but when there are five photographers shooting one sometimes two weddings a weekend with well over a thousands pictures a piece that is quite a job! Then you stack the orders to be done on top of that and we keep our editors busy!

Whoooo Weeeee! Have we had a busy year or what! Studio renovation, weddings galore and kicking our portrait studio into high gear.

Mandy is taking a break from the blogging for now because I think she is buried somewhere under paint cans, camera equipment and studio props;) Don't worry pictures of our new place are on there way. You won't believe the transformation!

OK so let me introduce myself. I am the studio newbie Jalaina. I am the Marketing Director and I plan to stock you! LOL! No really I want every bride from within a 100+ mile radius to at least hear about us and take a look. I know once a potential bride see's what we can do, they will know they don't want anyone else to shoot them! Watch out Oklahoma!

In the coming weeks we will be introducing the other girls that work behind the scenes. These girls deserve all the praise we can throw at them. They are a large part of the studio lifeblood. They edit, design, place orders, answer the phones and wait on you when you walk through our door! You might think that sounds easy, but when you consider the number of weddings we shoot each year and think of all the brides who can't wait to see their 1,000+ photos online and then order their 40 page album you will come to appreciate our wonderful editors! But I'll stop bragging on them so that they can speak for themselves.

So look for changes! We are going to be everywhere! Start with Facebook and join our fan club! Our plan for now is that we will be at the bridal show on January 3rd here in the city at the Cox Center and Dillard's in Enid on January 10. Some time in late January we are going to have an open house to show off our new place! So plan to come join us and meet the lovely ladies of Dinsmore Studio;)

OMG!!!!! Right?... Where have I been!!!

So I already know what you're thinking.... Please don't hate on me so much ok! I have been INCREDIBLY busy! The first week of February was spent trying to get things at the studio wrapped up and under control so we could make our journey out to VEGAS for WPPI!!! We left O'City on FRIDAY the 13TH....YIKES! and not returning home until late late Friday the 20th, ok maybe we should just say early AM on Saturday the 21st! Had a BLAST and LEARNED so much! Hooked up with some really crazy people in the business, learned how to become a VISUAL PIMP, and hit a couple of VIP parties! Ya know I couldn't go out there without doin that! LOL!! Robin (my crazy sidekick on the trip) and I can't wait to put into effect the things we learned! Watch out O'City!!! You guys are gonna be BLOWN AWAY!!!!! BRING ON THE STYLE of the new GDS STUDIO and the FASHIONISTIAs!!!!!! Are YOU REalLY reaDY????

They say what happens in VEGAS stays in VEGAS..... WELL...... We decided to bring it home baby!!!

OK... So you know in my 12 years in the biz I have photographed hundreds of kids... REALLY! HUNDREDS!!! And of those hundreds I would have to say Angie & Corey Armstrong have to have 2 of the cutest kids in the world! I mean look at em... Olivia and Emma... WOW!!

So I know I'm not the only fan of America's Next Top Model... I love Tyra... Ok but not as much as Brittney Spears... Don't ask... I'll explain that one on another day! Back to my point at hand... So if you watch ANTM then you know what the definition of "fierce" is... It's that look, the look that only a handful can pull off. That look of just crazy beautiful people... You know what I mean! Check out Lori Burke & Zack Williams... They came to me last week for engagement photos and man what can I say... They are a "truly fierce" couple.. I can't wait to shoot their wedding this summer! And Zack...... I WILL MAKE YOU FAMOUS!!!!! LOL!!!

This has to be a new world record! An 8 lb. 12 oz. 20.5 in. PEACH. Oh wait! Don't call the local "farmers market" yet! It's not a real peach, it's Kaleb Derek Peach! Born 01.06.09 to Derek & Rhonda Peach of Hennessey! Aunti Monica Bensch (one of our wedding photographic artists) brought him by for a visit to the studio so we could all go goo-goo for him.. Such a sweet boy! Congratulations to mom, dad & all on the arrival of Kaleb!

Have you ever had that day where it just feels like Monday even though it's Wednesday? Well then you must feel my pain when I ask "was everyday Monday last week"?... Man, you talk about busy! But we love it! Would NEVER want to change a thing! I would like to thank everyone for all the great emails I have received lately on how FABULOUS our site is looking! We are updating the galleries on a daily basis, and from the response I think ya'll are likin it! We try our hardest to give everyone the most unique pics as possible, we live outside the box around here! I'll be posting some of my favs from sessions last week so keep checkin in for that! I "SHOT" Melody and Juni Saturday night.... I know what you're thinkin... How dare you shoot them & then have the nerve to confess on the web... Well guess what? I "SHOT" them, I even "FLASHED" them... And I liked it! LOL....
Consider yourself very blessed if you are great friends with this couple... Melody Slack & Juni Coco.. WOW! They were amazing! So cool, so fun, soooooo one of my favorite couples to date! You know your wedding is gonna ROCK when you do your first dance to Michael Jackson! Get down... Hey! Heyah!!!! And the wedding party... They were CRAZY! Loved it!!! The staff at Walnut Creek were, as usual, so helpful and professional! Lookin forward to workin with them soon!

Whew... What a week!

DANG!!!! That's all I can really say! This week was crazy at the studio! Dates are booking up so fast! Just today alone I had 7 brides reserve their dates & photographer of choice! These are smart savvy brides who know what they want! YOU GO GIRLS!!! If you haven't reserved your wedding date for 2009 I would suggest you find a blanket and a pillow (maybe a heater too!) and head on down to the studio to camp out at the door so you can be first in line Monday morning for "prime date pickings"! I sure would hate for anyone to miss out on fierce wedding day images not to mention a great time hangin out with us! Why such a buzz? Word must have gotten out to them that we only do a select number of weddings a year! Or... ya know... Maybe they wanted to make sure they got in on our "JANUARY SPECIAL"! Oh... what's that you ask? Well... If you reserve your date for 2009 0r 2010 by 01.31.09 you will receive your choice of an in-studio engagement or bridal session along with a 11x14 from whichever you decide to redeem, all for how much?..... FREE, ZIP, NODA, ZILCH, NOTHING!!!!! You can't beat that ya know? You do realize that's the same thing as 100% off right? That's a better deal than Macy's 75% off winter boot clearance! Uh.... by the way that's where you'll find me on Saturday before shooting Melody & Juni's wedding... Which is going to be sooooo much fun! LOL.....

What's up for this coming week? Well.... numerous consults & reservation appointments, studio sittings, I think I gotta a location or two also! Let me see.... what else.. Oh... our work is being featured in the Wedding Tabloid for the Enid News & Eagle (my home town! E-town baby!) which will debut on Wednesday the 21st... We are also a premier vendor at the Dillard's Bridal Fair that will be taking place at Oakwood Mall in Enid on Sunday January 25th. You should definitely come out to see us! Not only are we gonna release our new video but also something you have NEVER seen or experienced before when it comes to reception pics! What is it????..... Ya wanna know huh? Well.... It's.... She is one of the most FAN-TAB-U-LOUS kids I get the great joy of photographing about 3-4 times a year. She turned 4 this week and her mommy, Jalania brought her in for a visit. I started taking Evie's pics when her mom was still pregnant and came in for belly shots! Since then Jason & Jalania have been blessed with 2 more beautiful boys (Sawyer & Thad). Evie is one of the best big sisters ever! Watch out for her, she's gonna be big one day!

Hey hey all! I know.... I know.... It's about time we got around to "bloggin"! With all the new & exciting things happening at the studio I just had no time! But I pinkie swear you will always know what's happenin around here now!

So let me start off by introducing the studio & myself to those of you who are not familiar.
Dinsmore Studio has been in business for over 60 years in OKC. The studio was started by photographer Gordon Dinsmore in 1946. Artistic, charismatic, and so humorous Gordon (see pic...so cute...LOL!) quickly found his place in the world. His enthusiasm rapidly spread and next thing you know he had many associate photographers. Today, his legend is able to live on through the great photographers...wait...ARTISTS, that the studio commissions...

OK... so who am I? Well, I am Mandy Davis the studio manager & one of the select artists at the studio. I have been a Professional Wedding & Portrait Photographer for 13 years now! I moved here to the city from my hometown of Enid when I married about a year ago. I cannot even begin to explain to you guys my passion that I have for what I do.... I eat, breathe, & sleep photography.... REALLY.... Ask my husband, he'll tell ya! If a day goes by without camera in hand I feel lost. I think I might need help... Is there a support group for passionate photographers? LOL!

Some of you might have met me or some of the other artists at the "Perfect Wedding Guide" bridal fair that took place on 01.04.09. If you were there then you know, it was a MAD HOUSE! Let me tell ya... I've done bridal fairs... many bridal fairs.... but this one WOW! Our booth was packed the whole time! And I thank you all so much for coming out to see us! We had a great time talking with all the brides and I have enjoyed all the emails since then also! Loaded below are some photos from the bridal fair... Can you see yourself in any? So Just a lil more for tonight..... The Studio has a total of 6 premier photographic artists ranging in style and 3 of the most FABULOUS editors that I have ever met! In the next couple of weeks I will feature each artist and editor on the blog so you can get to know em! If you're lucky, I might be able to hold em down and get a pic of each one too! LOL...
